My names Liam Small I’m a senior greenkeeper at the national golf club in Melbourne, I’ve been in the trade for 15+ years and worked at a number of courses and just love everything about the trade
What attracted you to greenkeeping?
I’m an outdoors person just love being outdoors and just getting that satisfaction of what you can achieve in this trade. See what a difference you can make on course as well.
Why did you join the industry?
I was a junior golfer here in Melbourne and just couldn’t get down to the handicap to go pro so thought the next best thing I’ll still be in the golf industry somewhat and here I am today 15 years later and haven’t looked back.
What’s the best thing you’ve learned during your career?
To always keep an open mind sometimes a day can throw a curveball at you that you don’t expect.
What’s the most difficult challenge you’ve had to face?
I’d say dealing with different people and different personalities
Best career achievement?
Working the 2016 World Cup of golf at my then home club Kingston Heath, seeing the event start to finish and the amount of prep and hours that go into tournament prep.
What inspiring words would you say to young greenkeepers?
To keep your head down stick it out and to keep an open mind and you won’t stop learning.

To be a superintendent
