Meet the members, Wesley Saunders

I am Wes Saunders, originally from Sydney now living in Scotland. I’m a spritely 44 years old, with a lovely wife and 2 daughters. I have been in the industry for 26 years and currently the Course Manager at Dunblane New Golf Club in Dunblane Central Scotland.
What attracted you to greenkeeping?
When I finished high school I had an apprenticeship lined up to be a chippy but it fell through. So I was looking for another job when I stumbled upon an apprenticeship for a greenkeeper after looking more into the job I applied and the rest as they say is history.

Why did you join the industry?
When I was looking into the job originally and found more out about it I was playing cricket on turf pitches and had also been playing football (soccer) for 15 years. So I wanted to know more about the two biggest loves in my life.

What’s the best thing you’ve learned during your career?
The one that has stuck in my mind and has been said on several occasions is “you can’t control mother nature” accept it, deal with it and move on.

What’s the most difficult challenge you’ve had to face?
There have been a few challenges over the years and some unmentionable, but the most recent was when we moved to Scotland it took 10 months to find a job in the industry which took a heavy toll on my family and I.

What’s your funniest greenkeeping moment?
I was working a seasonal job at Manly GC when I was given the task to cut greens with the triple. So I looked at the directional chart and went to my first green and on my second pass I got stuck on a bunker edge. After some time we finally got the machine unstuck and out of the bunker. The assistant came up and asked me what happened I explained the situation, at which he said to me we never cut greens side to side with the triple only with the hand mowers.🙄 it cost me a case of beer that Friday.

Best career achievement?
Becoming a Certified Sport Turf Manager (CSTM)
What keeps you in the industry?
I love what I do and it’s not a job when you love what you do.

What inspiring words would you say to young greenkeepers?
You only get out what you put in. Work hard, listen and DON’T be afraid to ask for help.
What are your future goals?
To continue to improve and be the best I can be.

Favorite sport?
Golf and football.

Favorite sportsperson?
I don’t have one.

What’s your dream job?
That’s a tuff one, as I am currently living in Scotland it would have to be working at a highly regarded links course.

What’s your ultimate retirement goal?
Working somewhere in the sun where I can golf and fish all year round.

What do you think of International greenkeepers for hire?
IGFH is a great initiative, bringing greenkeepers from all around the world together, creating opportunities for greenkeepers to learn and grow.
