Greenkeeping and grounds management are roles where women are still a rare sight. Jobs in turf management have been traditionally filled by men, requiring a combination of physical endurance and technical expertise that hasn’t historically been associated with women in the workplace.
Thankfully, times are changing and these sexist, outdated opinions are where they belong: in the past. While the number of women in greenkeeping remains small, those who pursue this career are proving they belong and inspiring others to follow.
Today, we’re speaking with Daisy, a 22-year-old greenkeeper from Hertfordshire, to hear her story, including her experiences in the industry so far, her dream career, and her advice for other women considering a similar path.
Hi Daisy! Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m 22 years old and from Hertfordshire. I recently achieved my Level 2 qualification in greenkeeping, which has been an exciting milestone in my career. Being part of this industry allows me to combine my love for the outdoors with my passion for contributing to the quality and performance of turf surfaces
What inspired you to pursue a career in greenkeeping?
I’ve always loved being outdoors, and my family shares that passion. My journey into greenkeeping began when I worked at a garden centre, where I gained experience working with plants and building materials. Interestingly, the garden centre was located opposite a golf club, and we often designed their spring hanging baskets. I also worked in landscaping with my brother, which further fueled my interest in outdoor environments.
When I saw a greenkeeping position advertised, I decided to give it a try. I started part-time, quickly transitioned to full-time, and discovered a true passion for it. My greenkeeping journey officially began in 2021, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see how much I’ve grown since then.
What is your work experience in the field? How did you start out and where are you now?
When I started at my first golf club, I focused on tasks like raking bunkers and morning setup. At 19, I never imagined I’d be using machinery so soon, but within weeks, the deputy and first assistant taught me to use the Toro pedestrian mower. From there, I quickly picked up new skills and gained experience with various equipment. I’ve always approached every task with dedication, which has helped me grow.
I started my greenkeeping journey at my first club in September 2021, and in February 2024, I moved to Hadleywood Golf Club. Since joining, I’ve learned so much, including experiencing my first PRO AM and being involved in the preparation for the event. I’ve also seen the installation of new tees and the addition of new bunkers. It’s been exciting to see all these changes and to experience how different clubs approach their daily tasks and projects.
Have you encountered any challenges being a woman in a male-dominated field?
I’ve definitely faced a few challenges along the way, but I’ve always given it my all to show that I’m hardworking, regardless of my gender. Joining a predominantly male industry has been a bit of a learning curve—for everyone. As more women are entering the field, it’s led to some changes in how teams operate, with extra support being put in place that wasn’t necessary before.
Overall, I’ve been really fortunate to have been supported and treated the same as everyone else. It’s great to see the female greenkeeping presence growing, and it’s exciting to be part of that change
Do you have a dream career path in mind?
Now that I’ve recently qualified, I’d love to take my career international and work overseas. I’m particularly interested in the programme in Ohio, USA, and I’ll be looking into that opportunity further. I’d also like to explore various other countries to experience different climates and the unique challenges greenkeepers face around the world. It would be a great way to expand my skills and gain new perspectives
What would you say to other women who are considering a job in greenkeeping?
I’d say, go for it, and don’t be intimidated! Greenkeeping is a career that’s not often talked about, but if you love the outdoors, it’s an incredibly rewarding path. It offers a unique mix of hands-on work, problem-solving, and working in beautiful environments. Don’t let the fact that it’s a male-dominated field hold you back—there’s a growing presence of women in the industry, and it’s an exciting time to join!
