Enhancing Performance and Sustainability

On Tuesday 23rd July 2024, over 50+ attended the Synthetic Surfaces Seminar at Loughborough University, organised and hosted by Syn-Pro by SISIS from the Howardson Group. International Greenkeepers were also present with their stand, alongside Fleet Line Markers in the outdoor area. Other companies present included Musco Lighting, Harrod Sports, Labosport, and SIS Grass.

The day kicked off with a warm welcome from Jason Briggs of Dennis & SISIS, who set the tone for a series of presentations and discussions.

Benefits of Synthetic Turf Sports Surfaces. Prof David James, Group CEO of Labosport and Technical Chair of SAPCA, spoke about the advantages of synthetic turf. During the presentation, David covered performance, durability, and the potential for increased usage compared to natural grass surfaces.

Managing the Environmental Impact of Synthetic Pitches. Alastair Cox from the European Synthetic Turf Council addresses the environmental considerations of synthetic pitches, including adherence to EU regulations and best practices in field design and maintenance. His insights helped delegates understand the balance between performance and ecological responsibility.

Considerations When Installing a Synthetic Surface. Hayley Wilson of SIS Grass discussed the key factors to consider during the installation of synthetic surfaces. Hayley’s talk included practical advice on preparation, selection of materials, and ensuring long-term performance and safety.

Changing Over to LED Lighting – Cost Benefits & Eco-friendly? Derek Field from Musco Lighting explored the transition to LED lighting for sports facilities. This session highlighted the cost benefits, energy savings, and environmental advantages of adopting LED technology.

Midday break and complimentary lunch with an opportunity to meet the trade, stationed on their stands outside. This also presented a fantastic opportunity to network with peers and industry experts. 

Afternoon sessions – Outdoor groups

Delegates split into 4 outdoor groups for hands-on sessions focusing on the following topics:

  • Line Marking of artificial surfaces using laser-guided markers and synthetic paints, presented by Fleet Line Markers.
  • Goal Post Safety & Maintenance, presented by Harrod Sports, this session will cover best practices for ensuring the safety and upkeep of field equipment.
  • 3G Pitches – The Difference in Performance Between Maintaining Your Surface or Not: Andy Walker from SISIS.
  • Data collection and methods. Labosport discussed the critical importance of regular maintenance for 3G pitches and its impact on performance and longevity backed by data collection and inspections. 

After the outdoor sessions, the delegates returned to the seminar theater to round off the day with the final presentations and discussions. 

The Future of Hockey Pitches Alastair Cox of the International Hockey Federation shared his vision for the evolution of hockey pitches. Including advancements in turf technology and the changing demands of the sport.

The Future of 3G & Hybrid Pitches – Panel discussion. A short panel discussion featuring Prof David James, Alastair Cox, and Hayley Wilson explained the future of 3G and hybrid pitches. This session allowed delegates to ask questions and engage with leading experts in the field.

Good Maintenance Practice During Good, Indifferent & Bad Weather. Professor Paul Fleming from Loughborough University provided valuable guidance on maintaining synthetic surfaces under varying weather conditions. His expertise in multiple synthetic surface types at Loughborough University helped delegates understand the importance of a robust maintenance strategy to ensure optimal performance year-round.

Closing session questions & answers 

As the seminar draws to a close, attendees are left with a wealth of knowledge and practical advice to implement in their respective fields. This event not only highlights the benefits and advancements of synthetic turf but also emphasises the importance of sustainability and responsible management practices.
